Twentieth century

At the beginning of the century the population of Algarinejo reached more than 10,000 inhabitants. However, it is also at this time that the decline of the town begins. The Spanish civil war contributed to this, during which the town once again became the border between the national troops of Granada who had taken the town, and the republicans quartered in Priego de Córdoba. This sad event in the history of Spain was followed by the terrible episodes of emigration in the 1960s, from which Algarinejo, even today, has not recovered. From 1955 to 1981 mainly, the inhabitants of the municipality emigrated, above all, to Palma de Mallorca, Catalonia and to a lesser extent abroad.
